after iv antibiotics yesterday, tooth abscess swelling gotten worse. should i go back to the er? i'm taking cleocin (clindamycin phosphate) hcl 300mg 3x daily for 7 days.

Probably OK, but...: Antibiotics don't work overnight, and it's not unusual for symptoms to get worse for a day or two. Typically I would not expect much improvement until 2-3 days. But to be safe, phone the ER or your doctor. If the swelling is severe, pain increasing, or fever, they might want to recheck things in person.

can jaw swelling on left side be caused by any other dental/jaw issue other than abscess? i have slightly swollen left face but no pain.on clindamycin

i was on 7 days of 875 mg amoxicillin for abscess tooth swelling. today, i got the root canal done for coronal leakage. now there is no swelling or pain. is clindamycin 300 mg needed?

Probably not: It appears that you have no more signs and symptoms.   Of course your dentist will need to look at the tooth, the surrounding gum area and an xray to determine this.   However, once you have had a root canal to address the abscess and a round of antibiotics the infection should be gone.

Absolutely NOT: Though Clindamycin can help with acute infection, it takes time. Increased swelling is an immediate health risk--especially if causing difficulty swallowing or soreness in the throat. Sore throat could be swollen lymph nodes, but could also indicate a spread of the infection. Recommend you seek immediate attention with your dentist or emergency room if s/he is unavailable.

Abscess: May take 48-72 hour’s for antibiotic to kick in.  May need additional drainage, change in antibiotic, or other treatment.  Call your Dentist to report your status.  If symptoms do not resolve referral to a root canal specialist, an Endodontist, may be in order.

Go back to dentist: This may be an abscess, there may be a resistant organism, there may be a completely different problem.  Go and get this taken care of and hope you are better soon.

Abcessed tooth: The clindamycin will not cure the abcess.  It is only used to help control the infection. You will need a root canal, or have the tooth extracted.
If the swelling is increasing, you need to see your dentist or an oral surgeon ASAP.
