i was wondering if it is possible to break and partially remove an orif screw that has a sheared off head or if you can drill around it and remove it entirely from the bone? the screw runs anterior to posterior in my distal tibia?

"threaded splinter": It sounds like you may be referring to screw hardware removal from an ankle syndesmosis injury for which two screws were placed across your fibula into the tibia. Theses screws are commonly removed (akin to a "threaded splinter") as an outpatient procedure once adequate healing has occurred. Pain should be considerably less than the perioperative pain who had at the initial surgery.

if i fall one of my protruding screws from my tibia will it damage my fibular?

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: Once the bones are healed there is very little motion of the bones, and it is highly unlikely that a fall would damage anything.  The screws and or other hardware are usually left in the patient for the rest of their life with no ill consequences.

Retained hardware: Retained hardware may cause a sensory neuritis, or burning pain, as you are describing. May also be referred from spine, such as sciatica. Check with orthopedic surgeon to see if hardware removal or desensitization may help.

i m 51 yrs have ostio perosis congenital a plate and several screws in the top of my tibia should i remove the plate i m worried about the bone not healing properly ?

Osteoporosis: If you have osteoporosis and a fracture that was repaired with a plate, it is usually not necessary to remove the plate unless it starts to cause a problem. The bone heals around the plate, and removing the plate may cause weakening of the bone. Talk to your orthopedist for specific advice regarding your situation.

4 months ago i broke my leg in low tibia, ankle bones, and snapped fibula. i got metal plate and screws on fibula & it healed enough to walk normal. but, when i walk it feels like the plate shaking. is this normal?

: It is probably not and you just have the feeling. The screws dont come loose that easily and you can probably feel it move . if so. Best is to see your doc right away.

X-ray should: X-ray should be enough to see fractured bone is healed but if you think you are high risk for osteopenia or osteoporosis DEXA scan might be helpful. Do not forget about high calcium diet and Vit D supplement .

May take longer: Obviously you sustained a severe injury to 
your ankle.
Once the doctor confirms that the fracture
is healed sufficiently you will be allowed and
be able to weighbear on the ankle. 
Hopefully you are not getting a delayed or
nonunion in the area.

: Not quite sure what your question is. Surgeries vary from patient to patient and all parameters are only estimates prior to the procedure.

None: It's not attached to a tarsal bone.  It's attached to the talus and fibula.
