A member asked:

I was wondering if it is possible to break and partially remove an orif screw that has a sheared off head or if you can drill around it and remove it entirely from the bone? the screw runs anterior to posterior in my distal tibia?

This is a technical question which cannot be properly addressed here. Contact your orthopedic surgeon and have a detailed conference to make decisions regarding the next steps. A second opinion may be useful.

Most screws can be removed even if the head is "sheared off." The question that you and your orthopedist need to address is whether this screw is causing any problems and do they merit the risks inherent to surgical removal.
