: Bad=5 and standard=10 years. This is a general statement. If a major wound was contaminated by soil and debris with cleaning delayed for any period of time the shortened 5-year rule would apply. For most simple cuts a longer time frame is used.

10 years: Tetanus shots last at least 10 years the newer shot called tdap (diphtheria tetanus and pertussis)became available for adults in 2005-2006 it protects against pertussis (whooping cough) it should be given once to any  one who wishes protection against  pertussis and replaces the old dt for most patients. Questions  need to be addressed  to md or knowledgeable rn.

If : If you have not had a tetanus shot in the past ten years then it is a good idea to get one. Also monitor the area for signs of infection (pain, redness, pus) and also fever. If any of these things are present seek medical attention.

Recovery: Well, you've asked your immune system to 'multi-task' - processing 2 vaccines at one time, that cover for multiple diseases (several strains of flu, several different diseases- diphtheria, ?pertussis with the tetanus shot). It's completely NORMAL to feel this way. Kind of like going to the gym and working out - you definitely feel it. I expect you'll recover fine. Sleep, chicken soup, rest, etc.

A cut is a cut: Tetanus is possible when a cut on the skin is contaminated by tetanus spores that are all around, predominantly in soils. It doesn't matter what made the cut if the exposure comes after the skin is open. The rusty nail is the classic source because it is on the ground to begin with when people step on it. Even if low risk it serves as a reminder to update your protection.If > 10 yrs get the shot.

If you haven't had a booster with pertussis vaccine, it's recommended for your next one. It's called tdap.
