i am diagnosed with barrett's esophagus with no dysplasia. is it a good idea to stay on the prescribed ppis after i no longer have gerd symptoms?

Ask your doctor: You need to follow up with your gastroenterologist and ask him/ her about that. You have higher change to get esophageal cancer, so regular follow up with your gastroenterologist is very important and he/she will tell you staying on ppi is necessary or not even without symptoms of gerd.

Don't wait for sxs: Barrett's epithelium occurs as a terminal event in those with chronic gerd, but gerd may be "silent" for years. Don't wait to feel sick since barrett's leads to esophagus cancer. Poorly treated barrett's can progress by replacing more ; more of the esophagus lining, ; can become dysplastic. Barrett's warrants surveillance endoscopy, aggressive acid suppression, ; maybe ablation ;/or surgery.

just started adderall xr. taking dexilant for gerd. both work well for me. understand ppis react? what can be taken for gerd instead? space meds?

The combination of: these two agents may affect the onset of action of the Adderall. Take the Adderall in the morning and the Dexilant at lunch. If you notice side effects or decreased benefit from this regimen talk to your health care provider for suggestions regarding alternatives since he/she has all of your health history available.

gerd entire life tried anti-acids, h2,ppi, lifestyle changes and wedge pillows and nothing works. dr says she can't help me.  what now? no surgery

DGL is used to: help with acid reflux and is safe.  If you take licorice that is not DGL, over time it can raise your blood pressure.  Please consult w/your doc.  Peace and good health.

PPI delayed; H2 fast: PPIs do not usually work immediately and can take several days to a week in the worst case.

H2 blockers like Pepcid and Zantac (ranitidine) work much more quickly, within hours.

Both of these decrease production of new acid.

For immediate relief you need chemical neutralization of existing acid with e.g. Pepto-Bismol or Mylanta/Maalox.

i am a 51 year old woman. i have gerd, have used omeprazole daily for over 20 years.  the medication no longer seems to be helping as i have acid reflux constantly. i also have ibs. is the ppi causing low stomach acid making me worse? should i stop?

GI  doc: 20 years os too long to live with GERD. You may also have damage to lower esophagus that needs to be evaluated. It would be prudent to see a GI specialist for a comprehensive evaluation and treatment. Depends: if you are taking it OTC and have not had a definitive diagnosis, you should take it for no longer than two weeks. However, if  GERD has been officially diagnosed, it often takes at least several months to get it under good control. At that point one might consider a trial of trying to stop the medicine, but often people need long-term maintenance therapy to keep it under control. Good luck.

are there any other medications normally prescribed with ppis for gerd? can you just take the ppi only?

YES: H-2 BLOCKERS   EG: PEPCID AC  (OTC)
and CARAFATE (sucralfate)....ask your Pharmacist for examples!

if ppis and diet only help a little with heartburn and other gerd symptoms, can anything else be done besides surgery?

Yes: On diet, want to ensure cutting back drastically on caffeine, coffee, alcohol, fatty/fried foods, too much acidic or spicy foods (some good), red meats. Lose weight. Keep blood pressure and diabetes (if applicable) in control. Exercise daily. Stay sitting or standing at least 30 min after any meal. Sleep on a regular schedule. Control stress. These all help with GERD unless hiatal hernia present.
