Depends: if you are taking it OTC and have not had a definitive diagnosis, you should take it for no longer than two weeks. However, if GERD has been officially diagnosed, it often takes at least several months to get it under good control. At that point one might consider a trial of trying to stop the medicine, but often people need long-term maintenance therapy to keep it under control. Good luck.
