Variable: Your ors or assistant removed the cast i'm assuming ... After a fx. Of the foot or ankle swelling(esp.) and pain can persist for weeks after the fracture has healed . In some cases , swelling to some degree can last months.If you have persistent pain or increased swelling after your fracture has healed, see your ors for a check- up.

Why was it on?: Did you break an ankle? Have surgery? Sprain your ankle? More info is needed. Keep in mind, your foot wasn't moving once you start flexing and extending your foot the swelling should go away faster. Warning: one fo the complications of a cast could be a clot in the leg which sometimes people notice as swelling. So if you have any pain or swelling in the calf inform a dr. Asap.

Need Support.: Swelling can happen after the removal of a cast. You will need to use an ankle wrap for a while. The drainage system needs time to strengthen. Call your doctor to let him know what is going on.

Post cast stiffness: It is very common for people who have been immobilized in a cast to experience stiffness in the joint (s) . This stiffness will usually resolve in a few weeks with some stretching but sometimes a formal physical therapy program may be needed.

swelling has increased 6 days after cast & stitches removed following ucl thumb surgery. is this normal? i'm in a formed splint & only remove it prn.

Probably not: New swelling a week+ after surgery may be an indication that something isn't right.  You should go back to your doc and have it rechecked.  Hope this helps!

Everyone's different: Swelling can persist even after cast removal.  Your time course was relatively short and continued swelling could indicate that you have not completely healed.  It could also be as simple as your body's natural reaction to trauma.  If you have pain as well or if you are concerned, speak to the doctor treating your fracture.

hi. i broke my knee and now after 1 month, the plaster cast is removed but my leg keeps swelling even my foot has swelled and my skin is darker than usual, is this a part of the healing process or is it a problem? what the reason can be?

: Does your attending MD know about the leg &amp; foot swelling? I'm concerned about a blood clot in a vein. A leg ultrasound to check for phlebitis is indicated. Inform your MD or consult a vascular surgeon ASAP

Post cast Edema ?: Swelling after the cast is removed is quite common. It is known as post cast edema. Swelling is actually due to the cast's long term effect on the lymphatic vessels. Some edema might also be due to the actual damage to the soft tissue at the ankle level. Treatment with elevation, compression stockings and physical therapy would help stem the tide.

my father had a metatarsal bone fracture in foot from an accident, the plaster cast was removed after 6weeks, after removing the cast there was no pain while walking, but there is still swelling in the foot, is it okay to walk or excercise isneeded?

: Without knowing if there was any displacement etc it is not proper to give advice regarding exercise. Best is to call the treating doc for it. The swelling may resolve gradually. Also keeping the foot elevated when sitting will help. Good luck
