i have been having pain just below the knee. initially the physio thought its patellar tendonitis & now the physio no longer has other ideas as its getting worse. scans show i have bipartite patellar. i am not doing any exercise since the pain?

Locking of Knees: Usually locking , unable to straighten the knees is due to meniscus or cartilage tear.  You are a little young to have this going on in both knees. However, if you played hard, or have  arthritis in the family it is possible to have torn meniscus.  You may need to see an Orthopedic doctor if they continue to do this. Sometimes arthroscopic surgery may  cure the problem.

Tendinitis: Tendinitis is not a severe injury even though it can feel like it. Treatment depends on location and cause.

Probably not: Usually not, but should be followed to make sure it resolves.  Usual causes include a tendonitis, a bone stress injury, or even a radiculopathy.  If it does not get better, an MRI can be useful to verify the diagnosis and guide treatment.

i have patellar tendonitis and i straightened my knee when i was standing  and it popped. did i hyperextend it?

Accepted Answer

The popping: sensation probably comes from "tracking" abnormalities as your Patella (Knee Cap) "Glides" within the tendon along a groove in your tibia/fibula! It should get "better" as your tendonitis improves. A patella immobilization splint (see right) may help.
