i was just prescribed prednisone (30mg) x7d for lung inflammation and i have been experiencing serious thinking issues in terms on concentration and memory retention in school. can i stop this early and will i experience any withdrawal symptoms?

Usually ok if...: If short-term use of prednisone or prednisolone, such as for 3-5 days, there should not be withdrawal symptoms, and one should not need gradual weaning. One can check with the prescribing doctor about quitting a course early... mainly to see if instead one should switch to inhaled steroids which don't enter the bloodstream in big enough amounts to cause neuropsychiatric steroid effects.

could it help you live longer if you stay on prednisone if you have idiopathic fibrosis of the lung?

Pulmonary fibrosis: To date, there has been no study published citing mortality benefit with the use of prednisone(or any type of steroids) in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(ipf). That being said, some patients with ipf feel that respiratory symptoms are better with steroids, so we occasionally prescribe them chronically.

No: Prednisone is not known to be effective in viral infections of the lung and should not be taken without consultation with a physician.

Accepted Answer

Yes, but more toxic: For some people, Methylprednisolone lasts and works a little better and  than prednisone. Dexamethasone is a common longer activing steroid but is not used for daily treatment, because longer acting steroids have more steroid side effects. Giving the Prednisone twice a day also has more side effects.

: Prednisone can reduce inflammation of the TMJ and of an ear canal afflicted with eczema. Apart from that I see no effect of reducing inflammation of other ear structures unless you're treating acute ear drum inflammation/infection causing actual earache

is there anything besides apriso i can take to help with colon inflammation/cramps? should i ask my doctor about prednisone?

Depends: Need further testing to see if you have inflammatory bowel disease and if  so prednisone may be one of the options

how many mg of prednisone can i take for inflammation/muscle spasms occurring below shoulder blade and for how long? heat/ice, massage is not helping a lot and i have some left over 20mg prednisone from a previous prescription?

: It is not prudent to self medicate with Prednisone. You may not need such a strong medication. It would be prudent to see a doctor to ascertain the cause of your symptoms and an appropriate treatment.

was given prednisone 20 mg 1x day for 5 days due to lumbar inflammation. what i don't get is my bp was high and i have a history of high bp, and prednisone can make it worse, so im scared to take it. heart rate is also faster than usual 90-95 bpm?

: Local injection of steroid is more likely to be used for lumbar pain rather than prednisone. I do not blame you if you choose not to use the prednisone. You could try non steroidal antiinflammatory agent with back massage to relieve the pain.

my dr have me prednisone for inflamed sinuses, ear canal, head pressure on one side of face, after sudafed didnt work.  how long does it usually take to clear up inflammation? thank you?

Accepted Answer

Varies: If you are on an adequate dose you should feel some results within 1-5 days with further improvement possible with ongoing treatment beyond that. Work with physician to determine length of time you need treatment because the longer you stay on the prednisone the greater the need for tapering the medication versus just stopping abruptly.
