what happens if you take antibiotics longer than directed?

Resistance: The question is, why are you taking the antibiotic longer than prescribed?  If you continue to take the medication longer than normal, you increase the chance that you will become antibiotic resistant to that particular medication.  Therefore, a different, antibiotic may be necessary.  You want to avoid doing this, as it may ultimately decrease your body's ability to fight infection. Keep smiling.

You can not handle: Go to an urgent care center or ER to be checked and treated if you can not get a hold of your doctor by phone. You may need tetanus shot , an x-ray, oral antibiotic, etc.

4mo old baby have infected rash, already on antibiotics, but keeps scratching so skin takes longer to heal.  what can i do to stop him scratching?

Itch-Scratch: If not seen by a doctor already, would do so. In the meantime, try a little otc Claritin or zyrtec syrup, based on his/her weight (i prefer zyrtec) once to twice daily to decrease itch. Also, mixing some Benadryl (diphenhydramine) cream with a hypoallergenic lotion and applying two to three times per day could help to moisturize the skin and decrease itch.

get lesions on my legs that start out like looking like pimples but take over two weeks to heal up or longer & always pussy with all antibiotics i use?

Pimples: You may have a form of folliculitis or furinculosis. See your doctor or a dermatologist. The pustules should be cultured to see if a bacteria is there or if they are sterile. In that case a biopsy would be indicated. Are you overweight? Your hormone levels may have to be checked. Needs evaluation and treatment.

i had a bump on upper part of vagina (i think it was an abscess). i accidentally squeezed it. i no longer have it. am i still contagious because i didn't take any antibiotics?

i caused a severe friction burn on my bfs penis and usually takes a week or so to heal. this time its taking longer to heal to the point i dont think its healing at all. is triple antibiotic good for treating it or should he see his doctor asap?

: I would not use triple antibiotic oinmnet on the penis. In general, it can cause allergic reactions. It Is only used for infections. See a doctor

within a week or two after treatment. Continued symptoms may indicate another vaginitis or possible dermatologic condition. Recommend you see a dermatologist or OB/GYN for diagnosis or treatment.

: Take your antibiotics in the way your Doctor is recommending. The entire upper respiratory tract is connected and lined with cells that produce mucus. If you have sinusitis, you probably have mucus accumulation in the paranasal sinuses, allowing bacteriae and inflammation to continue.

do longer term infections take longer to heal with antibiotics? i have had a stubborn ear infection for 6 weeks. amoxicillin failed. been taking co-amoxiclav for nearly 4 days and i dont feel much better. wait longer or go back to doctor?

Sinus congestion: Sinus congestion may prolong  recovery, and use of nasal saline sprays is suggested. Continue the antibiotic for a full course, but if you have fever or worsening, please follow up with your PCP. Watch for signs of green nasal dc and prolonged cough.
