A long time: Cirrhosis means scarring of the liver. Patients can live over ten years with cirrhosis as long as they do not have other complications like liver cancer, GI bleeding or encephalopathy or peritonitis. Once one has a complication from cirrhosis, they are defined as decompensated cirrhosis and often have an average life-expectancy of 2 years or less.

Ultrasound, liver bx: Cirrhosis can sometimes be diagnosed by non-invasive tests like ultrasound or ct scan. Sometimes a liver biopsy is necessary to make the diagnosis of cirrhosis. Other times blood work can show liver functions consistent with cirrhosis.

AA: Your aunt obviously need supportive therapy. AA should be useful, but she has to be enrolled in the possibility of spending time with members of the family who loves her. Forcing someone to go to AA is usually not successful

No, : No, it is not safe for your stepmother to take your medications, regardless of what they are. If her doctor wants her to take something, he or she will prescribe it for her.

No.: I'm not certain what specifically you mean by "excessive" and "longer periods" but, providing your overall diet is healthy and well balanced, it shouldn't cause liver cirrhosis or damage to any organ or system.  Garlic is used fairly extensively in many ethnic cuisines and, other than a garlic odor to breath and sweat, no adverse effects have been reported in human beings.

Yes and no: No need to have a liver biopsy to diagnose liver cirrhosis. Sono of liver or MRI liver will be able to tell you if you have liver cirrhosis.  Not all liver cancer requires biopsy to establish a diagnosis. A very high level of Alpha feto protein-and evidence of liver mass which c/w primary liver cancer- are enough to make a diagnosis. If AFP is low or if  suspicious for metastasis- biopsy is needed.

: Fibroscan can result in A false positive reading for cirrhosis in the presence of acute hepatitis and a number of other conditions giving false measurements of liver stiffness. Liver biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosis of liver pathology.

EGD is next.: People with cirrhosis can get varicose (dilated veins) within the esophagus which can bleed.  If the colonoscopy didn’t show anything then the next step should be EGD for a look at the esophagus.  Blood testing as well to see if you’re anemic and/or coagulopathic.

Years: Depending on the cause of cirrhosis, whether that cause is eliminated (e.g. Alcohol intake is stopped), and how much synthetic function is left in the liver, the patient could live from hours to years.  Regulating fluid and salt intake is important, and avoiding infections is crucial.  Further, if the person qualifies for transplant and is transplanted, they could live a decade or more, depending.
