Not "cause": In reality we do not KNOW the true cause of high blood pressure. We do know many things that will drive it up in a predisposed individual. Considering about 30% of population has HTN, it is fairly common. Smoking and/or any act that stresses the body or mind can drive BP up in someone wo already has HTN or is genetically "ripe" to develop  HTN

It is most commonly measured with a blood pressure cuff which is an indirect measurement. Sometimes a needle is place within an artery and attached to a transducer to measure the pressure directly and continuously in sick patients.

Secondary HTN is caused by other illnesses, including kidney disease, thyroid disease, heart disease, diabetes, adrenal problem.

Exercise daily. Aside from these lifestyle changes, you'll need anti-hypertensive medication(s).  Your doctor is your ally.
