had cataract surgery. instructions say "resume normal activity" in 1 week. doing landscape and deck work, dusty and strenuous. wait longer than 1 wk?

Each doc is differen: Every ophthalmologist has their own time frame for strenuous activity after cataract surgery. A lot of that depends on if the cataract surgery was difficult or even had a complication or stitch. However, I am not aware of any evidence that gives a specific time frame that is safe. The best answer i can give is ask your surgeon because only he knows what went on on your individual surgery.

will my vision improve immediately after having cataract surgery? i need cataract surgery, but i'm worried that i won't be able to see after the surgery. i'll need to return to work as soon as possible after the procedure. how long will it take for my vis

Accepted Answer

Visual : Visual recovery is usually rapid after cataract surgery.  My patients are often able to return to work one or two days after their surgery, depending on the occupation.  Normally only one eye is operated on at time, which will leave your vision unchanged in the eye that is not having surgery .  Your eye surgeon will be glad to advise you about returning to work.  The improvement in vision from cataract surgery should make it all seem worthwhile.

Depends: On how severe the cataract was, and therefore on the amount of swelling that results after. May just be a day or two, or can be a couple of weeks in severe cases.

33 yrs old. is it normal to experience iritis twice after 2 months post cataract surgery. any precaution required to work condition travelling?

Accepted Answer

Red eye post surgery: Iritis/uveitis after cataract surgery is not uncommon. If no surgical complication and implant in proper place ('in bag') it is due to rebound inflammation as steroids decreased. See eyemd to be sure haptics &amp; IOL in proper place. Have steroids on hand during travel. Though rare: If persists after surgery, may need a blood work up for uveitis.

Accepted Answer

No effect: Computer use does not harm the eyes nor does it change eye power.  It is fatiguing and drying but these are momentary and no permanent changes.

should both eyes be fitted with lens for distance or only one for up close work for cataract surgery?

Accepted Answer

Worth a discussion: Using a different power in each eye, termed monovision, is a popular way to avoid the use of eyeglasses.  If you get the distance power in each eye then you would need reading glasses.  Consider also multifocal lenses which cost extra but can give you reasonable far and near vision after the surgery.  This should be discussed with the surgeon doing the work for you.

optometrists: progressive glasses after monovision cataract surgery. how do these work?

Accepted Answer

The same: as they do before cataract surgery - by correcting both eyes for distance and having a progressively stronger column in the bottom of the glasses for close work.  By allowing both eyes to see clearly at all distances, this should allow good vision for those activities in which the mono-vision correction is not adequate.

i am going to operate cataract surgery but my sugar level does not decrease since last 5months ..i used some medicine to normal my sugar level but it doesn't work usually......as i am a bypass surgery patient for this reason i am so much tensed....?

: DIabetic patients who have high sugar need cataracts. So, if clear the patient for the surgery I want their diabetes controlled to help them heal well after the surgery. See your doctor for help, I often delay cataract surgery until the patients blood sugar is under control.

Eyeball awareness: Cataract surgery is considered a very low risk, day surgery procedure. You don't necessarily need 5 days, but that's up to you, your job, and your doctor. Since this is not a retinal procedure, the ROP is not going to impact this surgery which is on the outside of the eyeball.

Get second opinion: Cataracts that need surgery is a rare thing in this age range.  I suggest a second opinion if surgery has been recommended.
