i have been getting frequent mrsa infections many times i am unable to keep down antibiotics but also i don't think my pcp understands mrsa anyway i am worried have been getting more and more of these tiny dot cherry red dots is this sepsis?

: Unlikely. MRSA accounts for more than half of common pustules, abscesses &amp; minor folliculitis seen in the office. It moves side to side locally and rarely gets bloodborne to cause sepsis unless introduced during surgery or in an immune impaired person. Try triple antibiotic cream to your nasal outlets 2Xd and a bath with 2 cups of bleach/20 G water during treatment.

Essential: The earlier appropriate antibiotics are administered, the better the chances of survival.  You can't treat sepsis without them.

i had osteomyelitis and then developed sepsis i had no organ dysfunction or anything else i was placed on antibiotics and have been on them for four months the dr didn't need to see me for six is this a mild case and what are my chances for recovery?

: If you are feeling well, you have recovered from sepsis. Curing osteomyelitis sometimes is difficult and depends on several factors:  the specific bacteria causing it; predisposing factors like diabetes or surgery in the area with bone hardware; and others. Both an orthopedist and infectious diseases specialist should be involved in your care; they are the ones who can best answer your questions.

how common is it for a toddler with p eumonia on antibiotics get sepsis. i'm scared i just read it can cause sepsis.

Sepsis: In a child with an otherwise normal immune system, getting sepsis from a pneumonia is uncommon. If your child is being treated with oral antibiotics, at home, I'd assume an extremely low risk for sepsis providing you have your child complete the antibiotics as prescribed.

No: Usually in sepsis blood pressure is low.  This in turn affects blood flow to the stomach impairing digestion.  This makes oral antibiotics a poor route of administration in true sepsis.  Parenteral antibiotics (given iv) are safer and more effective.

is the antibiotic that is generally considered to be the best medication for treating hypostatic pneumonia also the best medication for treating sepsis?

Please rephrase : Anibiotics target specific bacteria. In general, different antibiotics are used for infections caused by different bacteria. Pneumonia is a lung infection. Sepsis is a severe infection which has spread to the circulatory system. Both types of infection can be caused by the same type of bacteria.

i had a friend with sepsis who recovered quite well she was administered ceftriaxone iv in hosp i recall seeing her administered the antibiotic by a quick injection through a canulla but is it the case that a slow drip iv of this ab is as good/normal?

Accepted Answer

Sounds ok: Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) can be given quickly through an IV, or given slowly through an IV, or injected into a muscle with a needle.  The ceftriaxone should work just as well if given by any of these 3 ways.

how long can you live with sepsis if iv antibiotics can't cure the infection but oral antibiotics are used to slow the spread of infection?

Maybe forever: If the doctors have switched to oral treatment, the sepsis itself probably is under control or cured. Continuing oral antibiotics probably is intended to cure whatever underlying infection led to sepsis, or keep it suppressed if not cured. The details depend on that underlying infeciton, different for each one: pneumonia, urinary tract, skin, bone, internal abscess, etc. Discuss with doctors.

i understand that it is a standard procedure for a urine m/c/s to be done in cases of suspected severe sepsis. but if there is no evidence of a uti & the antibiotics would cover a uti in any case then what is the point of it? does it really matter?

UTI w/no symptoms: Many cases of sepsis can be due to urinary tract infections that may have no symptoms.  Also, sepsis means infection throughout the blood stream. The germs spread and cause infections in other organ systems, that initially showed no infection. Also, special cultures may need to be done to detect germs that need special culture material to detect them.

will antibiotics prevent sepsis or such from breast abscess? my mom has one but they have not drained it yet. shes on doxycycline 100 mg 2x a day. she started today. her temp is normal?

: She will be fine with antibiotic. Mastitis can be treated with antibiotic and I &amp; D is only required if abscess develops. Good luck to your mom.
