A member asked:

I had a friend with sepsis who recovered quite well she was administered ceftriaxone iv in hosp i recall seeing her administered the antibiotic by a quick injection through a canulla but is it the case that a slow drip iv of this ab is as good/normal?

Sounds ok: Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) can be given quickly through an IV, or given slowly through an IV, or injected into a muscle with a needle. The ceftriaxone should work just as well if given by any of these 3 ways.

Ceftriaxone : in the vast majority of cases ceftriaxone is administered as a continuous infusion over one hour, although it may be administered faster

Yes: Ceftriaxone may be administered as either a push injection or a slow drip (over 15-30 minutes) It can also be given as an intramuscular injection. All of these ways are equally good.

Both are fine: It depends on the setting. Bolus dosing may be appropriate as soon as sepsis is suspected; otherwise, a steady dose is often best.
