Cancer: Concerning the possible metastasis to other organs is unclear but possible and  only god or the powers at be know that answer. Just spend what time you have with your mom and enjoy the present. Hospice and your doctor is very good in helping the patient as well as the family dealing with dying as well as possible cancer developments .  :)

Hospice: Most hospices only take patients with 6 months to live or less. I would need more information to tell you more.

Accepted Answer

When she is ready: Hospice is an individual choice; people with serious illness that is life threatening, with less than 6 months left to live are eligible.  If she does not want treatment and/or is ready to be made comfortable, she is ready to talk about hospice.

my grandfather has lung cancer and has it in his heart. he hasnt been making a lot of sense and has been falling alot. the hospice nurse took him off diuretic meds.about how long does he have? i live in a different state and would like to be there?

Not sure.: Doctors not good at predicting end of life except within last  72 hours.  If on hospice someone has certified that they thought he had less than 6 months to live, but we sometimes have patients who graduate from hospice!  if diuretics were keeping him from being in heart failure, he may not have long.  When patients stop eating/ drinking they usually don't last a week.  Ask the nurse.

Unfortunate: In end stage cancer disease , making  pain free and as comfortable as possible , is essential goal , which your friend is receiving from kind people of hospice , your  only hope will not suffer , how long is not the issue now, you pray for your friend.

Preterminal: Unfortunately the patient appears to be preterminal with life expectancy predicted to be in days or weeks. Hospice care will ensure that pain and suffering will be avoided and will not prolong death. I assume that the patient and family understands and agrees with this plan of care.

There is not: Small cell lung cancer is divided into limited and extensive stage. The usual stage i-iv cancer staging system is not used. Limited stage means that all sites of cancer can be focused in a radiation treatment field. If this is not the case, it is extensive stage.

Paraneoplastic,etc..: Small cell lung cancer is like other lung cancers, but it also often presents with a paraneoplastic syndrome due to its neurosecretory granules which contain neuroendocrine hormone.  The lambert-eaton myasthenic syndrome (muscle weakness due to auto-antibodies), is a prime example.  Most arise in the larger airways (primary and secondary bronchi), and include syx. Like fatigue, dyspnea, and cough.

Lung cancer: Small ("oat") cell lung cancer is distinguished by the fact that is has almost always spread beyond the lung when discovered and is therefore not surgically curable, but responds very well to initial chemotherapy. Now that the other common types are coming to be more treatable as well, "non-small cell" is giving way to more elaborate diagnostic schemes. Good luck ; keep up hope.
