in most areas to advise a patient otherwise is a violation of the code of ethics. If you personally feel better having a white filling, you can always have it changed.

Talk to dentist: Depending upon what tooth is needing a filling, a white composite filling or a silver amalgam filling will be fine. If the child is 4, it would be a deciduous (or baby tooth) most likely. The child will lose the tooth when the permanent comes in. Also, talk to the dentist about how long the tooth will be retained to help you make a decision. In our office, we only do white fillings for esthetics.

Need evaluation: The dentist will probably need a radiograph (x-ray), evaluate how best to replace filling, if possible.  If a filling can be placed, then the dentist will discuss with you the procedure and materials he'll use.

Redo it!: If you can get a finger under the tooth filling, you either have a 1)an overhang at the margin, of which you must trim back to establish good gingival health, or 2) a gap at the margin or open margin, of which you must redo the filling or recurrent decay will happen after a while.

Cracked or Bite Off: Rough spots can be caused by cracking of adjacent tooth structure, unusual wear on the filling, or a high bite where you are grinning on it, see your dentist who can evaluate the cause and correct it.

See a dentist: See a dentist as soon as you can.  That hole may be bigger than it appears.  If you wait too long, you may need a root canal or have the tooth pulled.  Get the tooth looked at as soon as you can.
