i've got awful hives and was prescribed prednisone today to help with itching and swelling. so far it hasn't helped - how long does it take to work?

Depends: On the hives, prednisone dose, other medications you are on, the cause for the  hives, if any. Kindly see your doctor and consider referral to a dermatologist or an allergist, meanwhile, unless contraindicated, you can take OTC antihistamines, preferably the newer ones, as cetirizine or loratadine, twice a day, which is double the recommended dose, till you see your doctor/specialist, best wishes

Hive treatment: In general, it will take a couple of hours since Prednisone needs time to suppress the production of histamine. On the other hand, antihistamine works faster. It suppresses the hives itself. Your doctor would decide which medication works best in your situation.

No: A short course of corticosteroid would not affect your fertility. However, antihistamine should be used as the first therapy for hives and it is a much safer medication.

Re-evaluate Plan: If your hives require 20mg of prednisone every other day to control you might want to see an Allergist to make sure you have maximized your treatment regimen. There are other less aggressive meds with fewer side effects than steroids that can get your hives under control. I would see an Allergist to provide further guidance. Prednisone is a category D drug so yes there is evidence of fetal risk.

Yes: Hives, or urticarial, are an inflammatory skin reaction.  They can be very frustrating and usually a specific reason is not found.  Inflammation of the skin can cause marks which may be darker or sometimes lighter than the surrounding skin.  This will fade over time.

H2O2 Humidifier: Try using 1 bottle of hydrogen peroxide and 2 bottles of water in a humidifier, and run it all the time wherever you are.  That will give you an aerosolized solution of 1% peroxide, which will kill viruses and bacteria on contact when you breath it in, which will then break down into water and oxygen.  Completely non-toxic, and should hasten your recovery.

See an allergist: A male that has hives that recur after stopping prednisone sounds like chronic urticaria (a fancy word for long term hives). Chronic urticaria can be caused by many different reasons. He should see an allergist/immunologist. This type of specialist will be able to do a thorough history and physical examination to determine if he requires more testing.

Unusual : I frequently use Prednisone to treat hives and don't recall having seen that happen. Could be stress.... People are often stressed when they get hives.  Probably nothing serious but best to see a dermatologist.
