LFTs post chole: Simple answer, is “yes!” the data you report is trending down—resolving. It could take a few weeks for lfts to return to normal after an acute attack of cholecystitis. Bear in mind, though, that upward trends could suggest a retained stone in the common bile duct. Unless an intraoperative cholangiogram was done during the surgery, then you would want to rule-out that possibility...

gallbladder surgery 3/6. high alt 245 and ast 173 persist. normal alk phos and bilirubin. us/ct/mrcp all normal. only meds are birth control. is this autoimmune hepatitis or due to surgery? how long can it take for enzymes to return to normal?

: These high liver enzymes, called hypertransaminasemia, are not due to gall bladder surgery, especially with normal ALP , Bili and imaging tests. You should be evaluated by a hepatologist for the etiology of hypertransaminasemia. Good luck!

gallbladder surgery 3/6 due to 15% hida/ruq pain. during gallbladder attacks alt and ast rising (normal prior).now sit at alt 245/ast 173 (25 days post op). normal alk phos and bilirubin. us/ct/mrcp all normal. autoimmune hepatitis or due to surgery?

: It would be helpful to know the trend your ALT and AST-are the numbers increasing, decreasing or staying the same? If the numbers are decreasing, it may be related to your gallbladder disease and the numbers should be followed until they normalize. But, if the numbers are continuing to rise, then you need to see a GI doctor for further evaluation. You may need more testing so see a GI doctor.

gallbladder removed 3/6. before and after surgery alt/ast were high but otherwise normal in the past. my last test on 3/17 had my alt 205 & ast 137. alk phos and bilirubin normal. hepatitis negative. us & ct scan normal. elevation related to surgery?

: Gallbladder surgery usually does not cause the liver test to become abnormal. You need an ultrasound to look at your common bile duct to be sure that there are no stones in it. You also need some liver evaluation to be sure that there is not an underlying liver problem. See your gastroenterologist. Do not ignore this. Good luck.

: Without knowing any other details about the pain, it’s hard to say. But there could be issues with the stomach, intestine, liver. A careful investigation should be carried out by your gastroenterologist.

: Check again with your surgeon. Sometimes it takes a few weeks to normalize. If there was a stone stuck somewhere else chances are your tests would not be neg. Hope you do well

: Primary liver disease will not be significantly improved by gall bladder removal.  See your GI physician for guidance and ossible other testing such as a CT of your liver and ultrasound of the liver density.

Repeat test: I would advise you to get a repeat liver function test In a week or so. If it doesn't normalize, then your doctor may order additional test. Did you have any alcoholic drink before the test?

will a doctor cancel my surgery if my ast and alt are elevated?

Maybe.: Online consultants will not be able to provide you with a precise answer. Much will depend on the cause of the enzyme elevation and exactly what procedure is planned.  Generally speaking, elective surgery will likely be postponed until the cause of any “abnormality” is determined and the patient's situation  optimized.  Your surgeon will be able to address questions more precisely.
