i have to have a hida scan with cck and can't take my meds. would weed affect the test? i don't smoke but i am afraid of the pain and nausea w/o meds.

Probably not, but…: The whole point of the test is to measure how well your gallbladder works when you are not on any medications or other substances. Because you don't know the effects of marihuana on your gallbladder, I would try to avoid this before the test so that you don't mess up the results of the HIDA scan. If you don't smoke marijuana now, this would not be a good time to start. Good luck.

Hard to tell: You can have a reaction to pretty much anything and they can be delayed, but it is very rare to be allergic to hida so while its possible, chances are its not.

35-75% normal: A hida (hipatobiliary iminodiacetic acid) scan with cck is normally done when gallbladder disease is suspected but gallstones are not present. The test is a radionuclide scan with an injection of the hormone cholecystokinin. The hida scan is used to see the gallbladder then cck is injected to make the gallbladder contract. Normal is around 35-75%.

Biliary colic: Recreation of symptoms following CCK provocation is superior to EF for the identification of underlying chronic cholecystitis. Indeed, a normal gallbladder ejection fraction does not necessarily rule out a biliary etiology of symptoms.

Need gb challenge: CCK availability has been scarce recently. Certain fatty meals have been compared to CCK and validated in literature.You do need a challenge; I use Boost kids essential formula as a fatty meal substitute in my pediatric patientsi There probably is adult substitute. This allows evauation of contraction of gall bladder which helps diagnose dyskinesia and chronic gall bladder disease

Not necessarily: Though some people with gallbladder abnormalities do feel pain upon cck injection, it is not 100%.  This is just one of many pieces of information gained from the hida scan, and in isolation does not necessarily indicate a normal gallbladder.  Also, studies show some people with normal hida scans still benefit from having the gallbladder out (if considered a good candidate by a qualified surgeon).
