Physical therapy: In a case where there are symptoms of nerve impingement, and some tests show it (MRI) and others don't (EMG), this may reflect the positional and postural nature of the way our spinal cord and nerve roots move in our body.  Rather than get more testing, consider physical therapy. If several weeks of PT had no benefit, then follow-up in person with a neurologist, physiatrist, or neurosurgeon.

Weeks: Usually outpatient or less than 23 hours in hospital. Return to light work within a few weeks and return to heavy labor in 6 to 8 weeks, sometimes longer.

Pinched nerve: The only capillaries that are directly broken from a herniated disk are around the disk,  pinched nerves from a herniated disk generate pain, and on some occasions see rot changes and weakness.

No: First of all you should comply with your spine doctors directions.  Restraining from vigorous activity is one way to get over the acute pain of a ruptured disc.  That said, if rowing does not cause any disc related discomfort, your doctor may approve it.

Many: Codeine is weak compared to many other narcotics.Many combinations exist from short-acting (4-6 hours): pure morphine, percocet, non-narcotic Ultram, demerol, (meperidine hydrochloride) dilaudid, etc. Then there are long-acting narcotics like MScontin and OxyContin.NSAIDs like prescription strength ibuprofen &amp; naproxen may also be good choices.Talk with your dr.Personally, I use glucose in a caudal epidural injection.

Depends: If you've done the physical therapy and no relief, then injections like epidural steroid injections or facet joint injections may be the next treatment options.  There is growing evidence that stem cell therapies can also be helpful and heal tissues but are not covered by insurance at this time.

Nerve pain: Yes any of these can if there is pressure on the nerve. This causes the nerve to malfunction so that touch, cold, heat, pressure feel very different and can be very painful.

Nerve block: There is a difference in nerve block and steroid injection for herniated discs. In the strict sens nerve block is used when doing an anesthetic block to numb an area for surgery. Herniated disc related pain is actually an epidural steroid injection.  The term nerve block is used loosely. Epidural injections will almost always involve the use of steroids.

It varies: Pain arising from a "pinched" or irritated nerve in the spine usually goes away within a few weeks to a few months depending on the cause.  However in a minority of cases the pain can persist for months or even years.  Scoliosis is rotation/curvature of the spine most often in the middle back (thoracic) or lower back (lumbar). This can cause added stress to the discs in your spine.
