Nerve block: There is a difference in nerve block and steroid injection for herniated discs. In the strict sens nerve block is used when doing an anesthetic block to numb an area for surgery. Herniated disc related pain is actually an epidural steroid injection. The term nerve block is used loosely. Epidural injections will almost always involve the use of steroids.

Nerve block: Nerve blocks are spinal injections which are localized to specific lumbar nerve roots - often done for diagnostics purposes. These typically do use steroids, but most of the steroid will stay local at the site of the injection, so the chance of systemic effects such as sleeplessness is lower than that of an oral or IV steroid.

No: They block may or may not have steroid. It is very rare to see any systemic side effects from it.
