Safe: Its a protein- it should not affect your insulin- unless sugar has been added to the ingredients. Read the label, make sure there are less than 10 grams of sugar per serving if you are concerned about insulin levels. There are sugar free whey protein powders available.

Safe? Hopefully yes, including kidney function. Wise...? Another issue.
