is there a high risk of hearing loss in canal occlusion surgery for bppv vertigo? is it total hearing loss or only some?

Probably no loss: Bppv is the result of loose otoconia (ear stones) in the inner ear.  This disease as its name suggests is benign.  If you have a dehiscence of a canal (superior semicircular canal), that is a more serious problem and is not bppv.  However, the surgery to occlude a canal should not cause a hearing loss.  The location of the canal is not that close to the cochlea.  However, there is always a risk.

Keep looking: Vertigo can have other causes than bppv, such as meniere's disease or migraine, so i would only consider surgery as a last resort.  My suggestion would be to do a trial of medications to treat meniere's to see if they help, such as Lasix (furosemide) or acetazolamide.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Osteogenesis imperfecta is often associated with otospongiosis (otosclerosis) which can lead to fixation of the stapes bone.  This fixation of the stapes bone can manifest as a conductive hearing loss.  If stapes fixation is thought to be the cause of the conductive loss, corrective surgery on the stapes can be helpful especially if there is sufficient cochlear reserve.

Mastoid surgery: Mastoid surgery itself may not affect hearing. But there is a small risk of facial paralysis, a complication.

No: Honestly, most adults with hearing loss need hearing aids.  However, an otolaryngologist (ear , nose and throat specialist) is the best person to diagnose the cause of your hearing loss and make this decision. i have a hole in my eardrum from years of tubes. i have hearing loss and a constant blocked feeling.. would a hearing aid help? don't want surgery.

Check with ENT,MD: You need a complete ENT evaluation including hearing test to find the cause of hearing loss and follow his/her recommendations.
Tubes in the ears for serous otitis media can leave a scar but do not cause hearing loss and you may have blocked eustacian tube or collection of fluid behind the ear drum or ear wax causing your hearing loss and hearing aid may not be of help.

does the cochlear implant surgery works if the patient has unilateral hearing loss ??

SSD : (Single Sided Deafness) is definitely a disability  however there are not many studies about the use of unilateral Cochlear implantation for the treatment of this condition. Suggest an in person evaluation with an ENT specialist in this surgical procedure. Hope this is helpfu!!l Good Luck!

my 2 yr old has tubes due to recurrent infections and we believe she may have some hearing loss can they do anything other than surgery again?

If you think..: ...Your child may have hearing loss, ask your pediatrician to set you up for an audiology evaluation (a hearing test).  It's not something that should be left, it should be taken care of asap.  If there is hearing loss, and he already has tubes, surgery will not likely be the answer. If he has no hearing loss, you can discuss what the problem might be with your pediatrician.

Usually not: Infants with cleft palate are very prone to develop frequent ear infections and middle ear effusion, which are responsible for reversible hearing loss.

my son 30 was turned down for a keratoma in left ear, navy. how serious is this surgery. he told them he had hearing loss before his first test?

Accepted Answer

Depends: Is this a cholesteatoma? If so, this is a surgery that necessitates typically 2 surgeries done on an outpatient basis separated by 6-12 months. If done by an experienced otologist/neurotologist, this is a routine procedure with return to most acitivites after a few days.
