please describe to me the healing process after a tooth extraction?

Simplistic answer : Blood clot will form in the socket(s) where the root(s) of the tooth was/were. Within 48 hrs changes happens in the clot. Bone cell started to form and bone production begins. Also there is a formation of gum tissue at the top. Within weeks the socket is closed and healed. But the bone level is lower than the original height. And will continue to resorb. Therefore it is better to keep the tooth.

is it true that a bone graft accelerates healing after a wisdom tooth extraction because food can't get into the socket and there is less risk of dry socket? if so, why isn't grafting more common for easier recoveries?

: I was told to wait till gums had healed to make certain bone was OK under neath. Also may not even need an implant if you can chew OK.  Save some big bucks

Appears Normal: People heal differently, and depending on the difficulty of the extraction, it can take up to two weeks for the gingiva to close over the socket. Do you have sutures? After a week the sutures can be saturated with bacteria and that can certainly cause the area to feel "itchy". If you have no real pain or swelling, you should be fine.

Red, Yellow, Gray...: Unless the extraction site is completely covered by sutured gums, it is likely that you see clotting/clotted blood in the socket. Careful not to lose this blood clot, as it is nature's bandaid to protect the healing wound.  The color will be red, then dark red to start. As the blood components break down, this color becomes more yellowish, then paler ; paler gray. The gums ; bone continue to grow.

Not the tooth: It's the complexity of the extraction. And sometimes it's just how traumatized the tissue becomes.

See your dentist: Tooth extraction is a surgical procedure and is not completely risk-free. Pain, swelling and infection following surgery is usually at its worst 24 – 48 hours after surgery. After that it should subside more and more every day and after 7 days stop. Your symptoms could be a serous problem. See your dentist or an oral surgeon for post-op appointment and treatment.

Antibiotics: Antibiotics are usually prescribed for a tooth infection. Have your oral surgeon evaluate the wound to determine if the medication is warranted.

Fistula: I am not sure what type of treatments you are referring to? If a tooth presents with a fistula, the first choice of treatment is a root canal therapy. If that fails, the root canal treatment is usually redone with or without an apicoectomy( to resect the pointy part of the root where abscess is present). You also must check for possibility of fracture in that tooth which warrants extraction.
