Canker sores: Canker sores are a type of mouth ulcer.  They can be caused from viral infections, a mouth injury, aggresive tooth brushing, biting the cheek or tongue, emotional stress or hormonal changes.  

Treatment is palliative...The sores will usually heal by themselves in 7-10 days.  Stay away from hot, spicy foods.

Non prescription orabase ointment can be applied before meals.

Rough, coarse foods: Cold sores are on the lips or on the face near the lips. They are caused by recurrences of herpes virus, which lives in the nerves after an initial infection, and then travel down the nerves to cause the cold sores at the skin surface from time to time. Canker sores are inside the mouth, and are not from herpes, but are due to the immune system reacting to something on the inside of the mouth.

Yes! : Minor canker sores heal in about 2 weeks by themselves or 14 days with treatment. :-) treatment can take the pain away, though. Major canker sores dan take much longer to heal.

It may well heal!: ... and we hope it heals well!  While they are very irritating cancer sore do heal well.  The source of the irritation is the virus breaking through and the neuritis in the area of the ulcer.  You are young and it would be a good idea to find out what is stressing you so that you can reduce the predisposition to having emotional episodes or spicy foods that cause ulcers.

No mouthwash: These are self llimiting, & heal on there own.  Warm salt water (only a pinch of salt) may be soothing, or coating them with a dab of milk of magnesia or using kenalog (triamcinolone) & orabase, but this is a rx.

Not cancer: If they are painful white ulcers that heal in a short time, they aren't cancer. You're not at much increased risk from this short time chewing and I am glad that you were able to stop this habit which in the long run is unhealthy. If you have other symptoms to suggest Behcet's or lupus or your neutrophil count (on your routine CBC), these slow-healing sores may be a warning.

: These are not viral infections. There is no problem with trying a mouthwash. I have seen success with maalox mouth washes. A prescription for corticosteroid gel designed for mouth use does good work. In my experience the cause of canker sores is elusive. Stress may play a role. If they don't heal after a week see your physician, dentist or an oral surgeon for evaluation &amp; advice.

: Tooth paste won't help much unless you use baking soda toothpaste or you can make a paste just by mixing baking soda powder with water. Why don't you just use baby teething gel OTC such as Oragel for pain, especially  before meal?  Most canker sores will heal spontaneously within a week or 2 weeks in maximum.

i have several ulcers/canker sores all over my mouth and nothing is helping. not warm salt water rinse, not oragel mouth wash for sores, not mylanta and benadryl. how can i get them to heal?

See dermatologist: I would suggest that you 1st confirm this dx with a dermatologist. Should they truly be canker sores and not hsv or some other pathology, you might receive a brief course of  oral steroids.
