^ fluid intake: Try for at least 64 ounces of water per day. Aim for 5 servings of veggies and 4 of fruit per day. Avoid crap carbohydrates. Increase dietary fiber - go for whole grain when possible.  May wish to decrease dairy until you become a little more regular. Good luck.

Constipation: There are lot's of diets to relieve constipation, as well as OTC products. You can look these up on the internet. However instead of just trying to temporarily relieve symptoms, it would be wiser to treat the cause. It may be diet, hormonal, medicine (including recreational) induced. See Your General Physician for a work-up.

Prune juice: Is an easy place to start. Medications may be too intense at this age, but prune & apple juice can both be helpful. Discuss the problem with you pediatrician at his next checkup, he may need to look into the problem.

No other disease?: Each person with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, then the things to try are vegetables, water, prune juice, prunes, fiber-with-water, Miralax, Senokot or other senna, milk of magnesia, etc...  Traveling can worsen constipation. if a person poops well only in her own home bathroom.

Fruits and veggie...: You do not state the age of the child, but generally speaking, increase water intake, poor water intake is a common cause of constipation, make sure you limit milk to 2 to 3 cups a day if over 2 years old, avoid processed foods, add oatmeal mixed with fruit. Some veggies and fruits constipate, banana, apple, carrots. Rice. Easy way to remember is any fruit that starts with "p" makes you go.

Fresh fruits and veg: Fresh fruits and vegetables in their natural state are high in water, and fiber and will help constipation. You might benefit from additional water in your diet. Having 5-7 servings a day of fresh fruits and vegetables should help constipation. Aim for at least 25 grams of fiber a day and a gallon of water or fluids a day. ( each fruit is about 2-3 g of fiber) each veggie is about 3 g fiber.

Quite a bit: Fiber can help your intestines hold on to enough fluid to keep your stool soft.  Fiber also helps people feel full, and, since it isn't absorbed, adds no calories.  Many fresh fruits & veggies, and whole grains are high in fiber. Drinking plenty of water will also help - aim for 2 liters per day while you're dieting.  Finally exercise helps stimulate the bowels to keep things moving on the inside.

Increase water: Treating constipation at home involves increasing per day fluid intake (2.5 liters for female, 3.5 liters for male), increasing fiber content of diet (more fruits and vegetables, apple/prune juice or fiber supplement), and using a stool softener for 1-3 days. Make sure not to strain as this can cause rectal hemorrhoids and bleeding)
