Need exam: There are a couple of things that may be giving on.  First even though you do not have bleeding you may still have  gum disease with calculus build up under yor gums.  Habits like smoking will increase bone loss. Clenching or grinding can also be a factor.
You should see your dentist for a complete periodontal exam and treatment.

Telephone: You should use a telephone to call a gum specialist, a Periodontist, before you try any additional physical intervention.  Gum (and underlying bone) loss can be caused by clenching/grinding, gum infection, overly aggressive brushing/flossing, Meds, malocclusion, systemic disease, or many other causes. Your body is trying to fight it by growing more fine blood vessels trying to send the blood's fighting cells close to the surface of the gums where bacteria grow. Unfortunately, more bacteria enter your blood, infecting the entire body, sending your immune system into over drive.

Likely Gingivitis: Might be caused by bad hygiene of the mouth... food gets stuck between teeth and gum gets infected and starts bleeding. You need to do regular flossing and take all the food residue out, and also to see the dentist for check up every 6-12 months 
Other causes might be use of certain medications or due to increased bleeding tendency of your body.
The latter two are to be checked with your doctor

Depends.: Depends upon severity of the platelet dysfunction.  If there are very few functional platelets bleeding can be persistent. If there are enough then bleeding would only occur with trauma such as brushing.

If left un treated, the bacteria can cause bone loss and eventually tooth loss.  Seek a professional dental cleaning and begin flossing daily along with your brushing to help stop the bleeding.
