Gilbert's syndrome: This is harmless. But excess alcohol can poison anyone's liver. I do not know what size drink you are talking about. 2 Oz a day is max recommended for most but less is better. Any Alcoholics in your family? Beware then due to this but Gilbert's is no worries.

: I'm not familiar with the gene, but genetic testing can diagnose Gilbert's syndrome. However we can usually diagnose it by the elevated indirect bilirubin and no abnormalities in the ALT or AST.  I would look for other caused of your mildly elevated ALT especially if your direct bilirubin is elevated instead of the indirect bilirubin. No and No: Patients with gilbert's syndrome have normal life expectancies and liver function. They do not have problems with normal liver functions. Drinking alcohol is ok with gilbert's, and similar to someone without gilbert's, drink responsibly. As further evidence that liver function is normal, a liver from a patient with gilbert's is suitable to be a donor for a liver transplant.

No proven treatment : No specific therapy is required for patients  diagnosed with gilbert's syndrome. The most important thing is to recognize that this condition is inconsequential. If bili levels are higher than expected, can look for co-existing condition (eg hemolysis, other mutation).

Not on Xanax (alprazolam): Gilbert's is basically harmless and isn't a reason not to enjoy alcohol, but you can't drink it on when you're on Xanax (alprazolam).  You'd be placing yourself in serious danger. Keep getting good guidance -- being 19 is tough for anyone, and as you learn new skills and ways of thinking, perhaps you'll become happier and won't need these meds. Don't think so...: The phototherapy for newborns with jaundice is not ultraviolet light, but a particular wavelength of blue light (420-470nm). Uv light is used for treating some patients with psoriasis. The very mild jaundice in gilbert's syndrome does not need treatment.

Safe: The only danger in "gilbert's" is that someone will misunderstand / overdiagnose / overtreat.  Very rarely, gilbert's people run into trouble with a few medications; your physician will be aware of this.  It should be called "gilbert's non-disease".

Hereditary: It is a liver dysfunction that you are born with. It is supposed to be mild and usually symptom-free. There is not special diet needs, but healthy eating is always good. High bilirubin: Gilbert's non-disease affects a few percent of folks. The liver doesn't process bilirubin quite so well as other folks, and the serum bilirubin runs high. It increases more if you miss a few meals. It's nothing to worry about.
