i had firs exam reflux esophagitis,second now erythematous gastritis but why i never have heartburn till now?

Esophagitis: it is not uncommon. Some of the symptoms like coughing when lying down, recurrent nasal congestion, chest/arm  discomfort  or sinusitis/ AM frontal headache  are not as obvious . Ask if they checked for h pylori and start treatment, avoid caffeine ,alcohol smoking fatty foods ,spicy foods, and start an H2 blocker or PPI per your doctor. f/u w/doc

Yes: Esophagitis is damage to the lining of the esophagus caused by stomach acid coming up past a failing valve at the top of the stomach, called gerd. Acid medicines can reduce the pain and much of the damage to the esophagus, but they do not stop the stomach fluid from coming up. Gerd is often associated with hiatal hernias and this can be repaired with anti-reflux surgery.

No: Esophagitis is inflammation of the lining of the esophagus. It is not evident on a chest x-ray but may be seen on a barium swallow of the esophagus or, with greater sensitivity, endoscopy of the esophagus by a gastroenterologist.

Inflammation: Inflammation of the esophagus can be a precursor for cancer. Inflammation of the esophagus and stomach can mimic or hide cancer. It was smart to get endoscopy. Your doctor did a good job biopsying the worrisome areas. If the biopsies come back benign, then you will be treated and observed.  Well done. 
Your working diagnosis is inflammation which is treated with medicines.

duration&dosage of treatment of nonerosive reflux esophagitis? have taken protonix 2x20mg for a month, still feeling acid, want to switch to nexium (esomeprazole).

May be warranted.: If you were diagnosed with nonerosive esophagitis and  protonix does not seem to be taking care of the symptoms after taking it regularly for a month, it may be appropriate to switch to a different PPI such as Nexium (esomeprazole). I would recommend continuing antireflux measures and returning to see your gastroenterologist. Good luck.

hi! had endoscopy biopsies taken after daily reflux. results said mild reflux esophagitis and mild non-specific lamina propria congestion. is this anything serious? followup appt is 2 weeks away?

: Only Dr who looked down there can best answer this but prob have mile GERD not serious. But over long time can lead to cancer.

is 20 mg prilosec once daily for 3 months enough to cure lower third esophagus of grade b reflux esophagitis with focal surface erosion? and how serious is this diagnosis? is this a severe erosion?

: I think you have moderate esophagitis but I don't think 20 mgs per day of omeprazole is sufficient for healing. If your gastroenterologist agrees you could take it twice a day for 4 weeks or switch to a stronger PPI.

how often is barrett esophagus missed on an endoscopy with biopsies due to being hidden by esophagitis? i was diagnosed only with grade b reflux esophagitis but should i be worried barrett (or worse) was missed?

: Barrett's esophagus is a condition in which the cells lining the lower esophagus change and become abnormal. This can occur as a result of long-term acid reflux disease (GERD) and is considered a precancerous condition. The diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus requires a biopsy during an upper endoscopy procedure.

It's possible for Barrett's esophagus to be missed if it is hidden by esophagitis.

i've been diagnosed with a 2-3 cm hiatal hernia with reflux esophagitis. i'm currently taking nexmezol 40mg in the morning before breakfast.will i have to take nexmezol permanently or will my condition heal over time?

Non-drug Rx helps: Reflux can be treated by eating smaller amounts more often (grazing), being cautious about things that cause irritation, not eating/drinking before sleep, and propping the head of the bed up. If the symptoms are severe, or continue despite those techniques, you may need drug therapy as well. Sometimes directly looking at the stomach with an egd is needed as well. Good luck!
