: Any irregularity of the esophageal mucosa is a cause for concern and the gastroenterologist is the specialist I turn to for the evaluation, advice,any treatment and follow-up. Concern here would be for metaplasia or Barrett's esophagus. Hopefully the evaluation may show neither.

Inflammed esophagus: Erythema means "redness."  the gastroesophageal junction is the connection between esophagus and stomach.  This area becomes red and irritated most typically in response to gerd (gastroesophageal reflux disease).  Other things too can cause erythema, so ask your GI specialist who performed the endoscopy what his differential diagnosis includes as to what caused your "erythema.".

Prob benign: Most common nodules at ge junction are benign (not cancer or malignant) inflammatory nodules usually from chronic gastroesophageal reflux. Given your age this is far and away most likely cause. Cancer at ge junction can present as a nodule so biopsy is prudent.

Basics: Erythema=red which suggests dilated blood vessels. Gastroesophageal junction=where the swallow tube enters the stomach. Mucosa= the surface layer of tissue. Antrum = the area near the entrance. The terms are not specific but suggest the kind of irritation that occurs with acid reflux. It does not suggest a cancer or other bad problem.

Low risk: There is a lag of years to decades for the development of cancer in the presence of reflux of gastric juice. It is good that you are seeing a doctor. If you are overweight, it is imperative that you lose some.
Have a healthy diet, exercise 30 minutes/day, drink plenty of water daily so your urine is mostly colorless, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs.

what does this mean on ct scan ? mild thickening of the esophageal wall which is measures approximately 9 mm thick below the carina and 7 mm thick near the gastroesophageal junction. there is a mildly enlarged gastrohepatic ligament measuring 9 mm?

: It is simply a description of the esophagus. In this instance, it appears that the esophagus is slightly thickened, but it does not tell why it is thickened. You should discuss this with the Doctor Who ordered the CT scan. If it appears to be a significant issue, andupper endoscopy may be useful for sorting out the reason for the thickening. Good luck.

Slightly higher risk: Barrett's esophagus are cellular changes along the lower lining of the esophagus in response to prolonged acid exposure secondary to reflux. This may be associated with pre-cancerous changes or even esophageal cancer and is believed to explain the rising incidence of these cancers in the US.

Not much: If there's a big patch of lymphocytes, it's often due to helicobacter. Your physician will look at the big picture.
