Normal: It is normal for the intestines to be bit uncoordinated after an abdominal operation with general anesthesia. This can cause some bloating, and eventually that all has to come out. There is nothing specific related to the appendectomy and "gas". Hope this helps!

Sure: If it's just crampy gas pain (no fevers over 101, vomiting or severe/worsening constant pain in abdomen) then simethicone is a safe over the counter anti gas medication. It's very likely she may be constipated too. If so, one or two doses of Milk of Magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) may help.

Yes: With laparoscopic appendectomy there is alway a certain amount of inflammation in the region of the cecum and adjacent rt. colon.  There can also be a minimal degree of ileus or lack of peristalsis in the bowel causing gas accumulation and retrograde motion of gas or belching.  One should  wait several wks for resolution.

A Few Simple Rules: The most common cause of gas pains after abdominal surgery is GI dysfunction secondary to inflammation in the abdomen+/-anesthesia.The best thing to do is to limit narcotic pain medicine, which is known to worsen the gas pains.Also, don't push food until your appetite is normal. Lastly, try and be somewhat active--it's best not to stay in bed all day (for many reasons).I hope you feel better soon.

See your doctor: What you describe is unlikely related to your surgery performed 5 months ago. Was there appendicitis or a normal appendix? May need gynecology evaluation too, but start with an exam with your primary care physician. May need blood tests, radiology such as pelvic ultrasound, etc.

Patience: The co2 gas insufflation that they use for laparoscopic appendectomies needs to be gradually resorbed by the intestines and then passed on afterwards.  There is nothing that you can do to speed this up.  It should pass with time.

3 days post open appendectomy, have fibroids, and pregnant. i feel very full, have some pain on the non surgical side, and gas pains today. is it norm?

Maybe: But don't guess. Call your doctor to get instructions and make an appointment to see your obstetrician ; your surgeon as soon as possible. Needs a full physical exam that cannot be done here.

Probably not but....: If you are passing gas and having bowel movements that is reassuring but in anyone with recent surgery who finds themselves suddenly having worsening abdominal pain it would be prudent to see their primary care provider or general surgeon who did the surgery if the pain worsens or persists.

laproscopic appendectomy on sunday night. started passing gas on tuesday, but none today and still no bowel movement. taking colace, add a laxative?

Yes you could: You should take some more laxative  although it is not unusual to be constipated if you have not been eating normally for a few days. The pain medicines can also cause or worsen the constipation. So eat normally and get some help from a laxative for 1-2 days till you have a BM
