Not sure of your ?: But it sounds like you are asking if the fractured root caused infections?  That depends upon where the infections were. It's hard to answer questions such as these over the internet without a clinical exam and x-rays.  If in other places in your body? Extremely unlikely! if in other places in your mouth? No. If locally around that tooth?  Possibly.

Unfortunately no: Without an examination with radiographs, your condition cannot be diagnosed and treated. These problems are best treated locally by a dentist who can see you and test all your other teeth, as well as your sinuses and bone. Fractured teeth do cause pain, so hopefully your problem has been solved..

Root Canal: When a root canal is performed the majority of the blood supply to the tooth is removed. This results in a more brittle and reduced tooth, so a restoration to cover and protect, at least the biting surface is needed to ensure the tooth doesn't fracture, even to the point of losing the tooth. There is no timetable but asap is always the best to not give the chance for something bad to happen.

Inflammation: The gum tissue around that tooth may be inflamed. Flossing should keep it clean and eventually alleviate the sensitivity. Brush twice a day, too.

what are some ways to treat a fractured tooth before seeing the dentist?

Follow these steps:: 1. Save any pieces.
2. Rinse the mouth using warm water; rinse any broken pieces. 
3. If there's bleeding, apply a piece of gauze or a teabag to the area for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops.
4. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth, cheek, or lip near the broken/chipped tooth to keep any swelling down and relieve pain.
5. See your dentist as soon as possible.

Existing damage: Healthy teeth are very strong and do not break easily, even when strong forces are applied during hygiene care.  Weak teeth happen when you had history of trauma (car accident, collision, fall, etc.), decay, multiple micro-fractures from clenching/grinding you are not aware of--especially if during sleep.  Other teeth may also have similar internal damages and are about to break. Get them checked.

Consult your DDS: In some cases, extracting the tooth or broken root makes the most sense. Only your dentist can decide if the tooth needs to be extracted or may be saved.

See dentist sooner: Assuming the tooth had no decay before fracture, the fracture could have exposed or irritated the tooth pulp. This can progress into a painful abscess at the root tip of your tooth. You likely need a root canal, or if the root is cracked as well, you need an extraction. Seeing a dentist sooner can prevent an infection from potentially developing.

Tooth: Not sure what  you are asking however it is important to have the entire tooth removed and any infected tissue in the tooth socket removed so that excellent bone healing will occur.
