Tendonitis: Tendonitis in the foot/ankle can be difficult to resolve, given the demands we place on them. Treatment may consist of antiinflammatories, icing, bracing and rest. See a podiatrist who can offer you a thorough exam and treatment.

over the past few years, ive had instances of waking up from sleep with bad foot pain in the top of my foot. this morning, i woke up with really bad pain in my left ankle. i dont have any injuries i know of, nor would it be overuse. what can i do?

X-ray: Avulsion of the base of the 5th metatarsal at the insertion of the peroneus brevis muscle would be the most common cause. An ossicle at the same point could also be painfully arthritic. An x-ray will prove the Dx.  Healing simply takes careful neglect over time.

Compensation: The pain in the foot and ankle may be due to compensation. Meaning you may be walking differently due to the knee pain causing other lower extemity joints to hurt.

Hyperuricemia-gout: Gout typically effects the big toe joint (mpj) due to sodium urate crystal deposits and due to gravity of the joint. It will present as a red hot swollen joint that you can barely touch. If you have pain on the side of the foot it probably is more biomechanical in nature.

Possibly: Flat feet can cause a lot of foot and ankle pains.  However, if you have swelling along the top of your foot, you may have a stress fracture, especially if the pain is gets worse the longer you are on your foot.  A good arch support, rest and x-rays to rule out a stress fracture is advised.  I hope this helps.
