Hyperuricemia-gout: Gout typically effects the big toe joint (mpj) due to sodium urate crystal deposits and due to gravity of the joint. It will present as a red hot swollen joint that you can barely touch. If you have pain on the side of the foot it probably is more biomechanical in nature.
