Over the past few years, ive had instances of waking up from sleep with bad foot pain in the top of my foot. this morning, i woke up with really bad pain in my left ankle. i dont have any injuries i know of, nor would it be overuse. what can i do?

Your description of a certain position and the same area and only when sleeping. It sounds like a positional pressure on spinal nerve. I would recommend seeing a doctor and getting a more definitive diagnosis . Anything from physical therapy with starching and strengthening your muscles for better support. A new mattress. But get examined instead of trying to diagnosis yourself.
