what are the pros and cons of taking food grade diatomaceous earth?

The CONS: are that eating dirt of any kind has NO NUTRITIONAL VALUE and can result in anemia (particularly Iron Deficiency Anemia) the PROS as far as I know are NONE! (Despite the many "claims" of benefits to bowels, joints, hair etc etc etc ) In my opinion NONSENSE!

Yes. No: Diatomaceous earth is touted among natural medicine enthusiasts as alternative to treating intestinal parasites. Since parasitic disease is a worldwide problem,  the who recommends effective avoidance/control programs and treatment of  identified parasite with a drug or combination specific to that entity.

Accepted Answer

Diatomaceous Earth: Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is used to eliminate certain insects as it is made from Diatoms which are mostly amorphous silica.  Food grade DE is "Generally Recognized as Safe" by the FDA.  I would check with your PCP who knows your history best regarding any parasite infections.

i took vermox and still have pinworms, i wanted to know if (food grade) dichotomous earth works in humans to kill pinworms?

Probably not: Dichotomous earth in your guts will probably do very little to kill pinworms. Worms actually live in dirt. However you need to see your doctor soon, and have the dr. Refer you to see an infectious disease specialist. They are more adept at pinpointing which anti-parasitic regimen you need to be on, and for how long to get rid of the infestation. Also changing your diet would be helpful.

: The condition arises in those with significant (5-20 year) regular exposure to microparticles of the material. The chance of the cited exposure producing a long term defect approaches zero. The lung does have a self cleaning mechanism designed to remove particles from what we inhale. That system will likely clean up and remove any inhaled material in the next few weeks.

Diatomaceous earth: Some people tout food-grade diatomaceous earth as a digestive cleanser.  It will not be harmful, but i'm not sure it's really needed.  Pica involves compulsively eating non-nutritive substances like clay and dirt.  The makers of food grade diatomaceous earth claim that use of their products may even help pica, rather than increasing it.  I could find no studies addressing this -- sorry!

i had neg- colonoscopy, egd, hida, ct abdomen/pelvis, ruq ultrasound, celiac panel. the small bowel series showed rapid transit. i also had a neg pancreas test. what on earth is causing my weight loss and undigested food/fat in stool?

Malabsorption: It sounds as if you are being seen by a gastroenterologist who has done nearly everything possible to evaluate you.  Strongly suggest, since you are in ohio, that you get a second opinion at the cleveland clinic.  If you do make an appt, bring all of your prior records.  Did you have a small bowel biopsy?

Yes: Any food is healthy in moderation. Rather than looking for a "label"; eat fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains; low in saturated fats; no tobacco and no more than one drink a day. It would help to exercise regularly to maintain good health.

Transfats and : Saturated fats. Look at the food labels and any foods containing transfats or saturated fats is bad. Limit your intake of meats and processed foods.
