No: There are no significant interactions between prozac (fluoxetine) and caffeine (or sugar).  You may be experiencing an elevated mood since you are on the prozac (fluoxetine) and have more energy.  You used to "need" the caffeine to feel normal but now your mood is more normal and the caffeine pushes it to edgy.  Just a thought.

Something different: There are other types of anti-depressants that act differently. These may include snri which does the opposite of your energy status such as effexor, (venlafaxine) pristique.  Discuss further with your provider on your symptoms.

Probably nothing: Fluoxetine (Prozac) is an SSRI medication useful for major depression and anxiety.  The medication should not affect caffeine and vice versa.  That being said, excessive caffeine can produce adverse effects.  Also for patients with anxiety caffeine can sometimes make this condition worse.  Best.

Prozac (fluoxetine) helps anxiety and depression. Sometimes, it can take upt10-14 days to improve symptoms and mood; to have sustained improvement Prozac (fluoxetine) should be taken for 6 weeks.

SAM-e: Elimination half-life of sam-e is about 1.7 hours, so it's gone from your system in about 10 hours.  10 days of a given dose is not long enough of a trial to know if it will help you, and the 400mg dose is only a starting one.  A therapeutic dose may be between 800mg-1600mg/day, in divided doses. You've not had a full trial in either time or dosage with sam-e,  but Prozac (fluoxetine) is fine if prescribed.

Adaptation: If someone takes caffeine (or just about any stimulant) regularly, the body adapts and "gets used to it". There are detailed mechanisms that explain this, but the bottom line is if you haven't been exposed to caffeine or a related stimulant, you will have a much bigger reaction to it, compared to someone who takes caffeine regularly.

Yes: There is no problem taking any ssri antidepressant with the diet pills. These appear to contain caffeine and cocoa, which can increase anxiety. But they do not react with medicines like prozac (fluoxetine). If you take Prozac (fluoxetine) for anxiety, though, be aware of the amount of caffeine you use.

Accepted Answer

Yes it is: If off Prozac (fluoxetine) for a whole month, it would  be safe to try sam-e.  However, i'd still suggest working with a psychiatrist while doing so, since sam-e does not have the same kind of track record of effectiveness behind it as antidepressants do.  Also, psychotherapy is a big part of the treatment of anxiety and depression.  Ideally, you want an integrative psychiatrist who's familiar w/sam-e.
