Osteoarthritis thumb: at the cmc or carpo-metacarpal joint is a common cause of pain at the base of the thumb. Other causes of pain include tendonitis of the finger or thumb flexor tendons or wrist extensor tendons.Often Nsaids or corticosteroid injection and or soft splints can help.

The : The symptoms that you are describing are concerning for arthritis in the hands.  This could be related to inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis), degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis) or other conditions.  It is important to be evaluated asap to determine the cause.  Rheumatoid arthritis can lead to permanant joint damage within 4-8 weeks if not diagnosed and treated properly.  Whatever the cause, a rheumatologist should be able to make a diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment.

my 14yr old son received pfizer vaccine 2days ago. no symptoms. today he felt a shooting pain from injection site to finger. he can bend and straighten finger but it hurts to touch and burns. no fever or other symptoms. could this be from the shot?

: It is possible that this is a reaction to the vaccination since the pain begins at the injection site. The associated symptoms appear to be related to nerve pain, and your PCP should be informed. Watch for signs of swelling, numbness and coolness of the extremity. Check that his pulses in the arm are normal. The problem should self resolve and if not, please follow up.

Glomus tumor: Would suspect a glomus tumor. Is the pain intensified with cold exposure? Gladium MRI study would delineate the tumor, plain MRI not as useful for dx. Sometimes seen on t1, t2 phases of mri.Could possibly be a neuroma in continuity as well seek care with a hand surgeon.

It could be broken: I personally have had broken hand bones and didn't know it until later when i had an x-ray.  It may be a good idea to see a doctor for an x-ray, just to be sure.

Use ice: Take some Ibuprofen and reassess in a while..If your finger rapidly swells and is black and blue it is possible it is fractured.

Orthopedic/Hand Doc: Make an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon, ideally one who specializes in hand surgery.  He/she will examine your finger, obtain x-rays to determine if there is a fracture (broken bone), and make recommendations re diagnosis, treatment, any further testing needed, and follow-up care.
