No: Fillings are generally made of composites\resins or amalgams and replace part of the tooth. Crowns are made of any number of metals, ceramics or metal\ceramic combinations and cover the entire tooth surface.

can you put a filling on a crown? i chipped a portion of a crown and the part that is left i was wondering if a filling willworkor if they will have  to replace the whole crown?

Typically : Typically you cannot put a "filling" on a crown the same way you can a tooth.  That being said, it may be possible, though difficult to repair the chip with materials other than what the crown is made of.  Consult your dentist....He may refer you of a crown specialist, a prosthodontist.

Yes: If they had to cut a hole through an existing crown in order to perform a root canal treatment on the tooth, then yes, you could have the crown repaired with a filling presuming that the rest of the crown is in good condition. If the rest of the crown is no longer in good condition, then the entire crown should be replaced.

does getting a filling / crown hurt without the injection numbing ?

Usually: If you need a filling or crown, an experienced and skilled dentist can give injections these days in a way that you should feel very little discomfort. Much less than trying to do it without anesthesia. There are times when a very shallow cavity can be done without numbing, as I have done, but only under the right circumstances. Ask your dentist.

Usually no: Each dental procedure has a numeric code (for insurance purposes) describing that procedure. Root canal procedure codes are different than restoration codes. What was explained to you before treatment was rendered? You may have thought something was included when in fact it was not.

Engineering: A post may be placed in the tooth to engineer the maintenance of strength, and then a core filling material is constructed on top.  This can give adequate strength to have a crown placed on this tooth for the longer term usefulness.

Yes: If you haven't been to the dentist for some time, problems can multiple quickly. In addition to having your teeth restored, you might considering trying to determine the reason you need so much restorative work. It could be many things, however, diet and insufficient fluoridation are a good place to start looking.

See  your dentist  : You should  contact  the   dentist  who  did  your  restorations  and  have  him   or her  take  a  look.  Possible  infection.  The  dentist  should  take  a  look  before  making  any  decision to remove  any restorations.  A root canal  may be   needed.  But  contact  your  dentist  so  any  possible  infection  can  be  addressed  before  it   gets  worse

Hard to say...: This type of question needs to be evaluated with a radiograph and in person, something that is not possible over the internet. You'll need to have each of your treating dentists explain themselves.
