If you are embarrassed to be naked in the presence of the doctor, tell him of your.concerns and he will perform the exam while you are partly clothed.

Difficult: Hard to do that type of exam on yourself, but in general a hernia (groin & umbilical most common) will be a noticeable bulge or lump at the site that may be slightly tender. It would be a lump that you could see or feel. See a doctor for a proper exam.

Not usually: Though the reflux associated with some hernias will often feel like it is difficult to breathe.  Weight on the other hand can cause breathing problems and worsen the hiatal hernia symptoms.  Losing weight and increasing activity may help both of your problems.  Still, if they are not improving or worsening you should see an md.

Accepted Answer

Depends: The combination of hiatal hernia and acid reflux creates the risk for precancerous changes in esophagus, aspiration pneumonia and other complications. Okay to set up an egd soon. Then depending on the results, the next egd interval will be set by GI doc.  Be well and take your medications, antacids.
