Why?: It is important to determine if you have a hernia because the bowel could strangulate in the inguinal canal and put you in the hospital or kill you. If you are embarrassed to be naked in the presence of the doctor, tell him of your.concerns and he will perform the exam while you are partly clothed.

Of course: As the patient you have the right to refuse any care you do not want.

Absolutely: You can refuse any exam or treatment. You just may not get appropriate care. A hernia exam is quick and painless and may detect a problem earlier than just waiting for symptoms to occur. It's usually the rectal exam that most people refuse!
