If you are embarrassed to be naked in the presence of the doctor, tell him of your.concerns and he will perform the exam while you are partly clothed.

Absolutely: You can refuse any exam or treatment. You just may not get appropriate care. A hernia exam is quick and painless and may detect a problem earlier than just waiting for symptoms to occur. It's usually the rectal exam that most people refuse!
