Difficult: Hard to do that type of exam on yourself, but in general a hernia (groin & umbilical most common) will be a noticeable bulge or lump at the site that may be slightly tender. It would be a lump that you could see or feel. See a doctor for a proper exam.

Groin swelling: The recommendation is to see your doctor. If you have a large enough hernia you should be able to see a swelling or lump at the site if the hernia and if you cough and look or put your hand on the area you should be able to feel a cough impulse which is diagnostic of a hernia.
