might be a dumb question but is my nasal spray safe to use if ive had it for over a year but the expiration date has not passed? this question also goes to all medication i might have from a year ago.

Generally yes: If uses as directed any such meds are considered safe until their expiration date. If you have in some way altered the med/stored it in an improper way,etc. it might be bad. The expiration date is the last date the product is considered at its full strength. Some of these will still be good for a while longer if properly stored.

i found out i overuse nasal. my nose blocked is getting worse. 
is there any otc medication i can get so that i can stop using nasal spray?

Xylitol: Xylitol is a natural sugar and breaks up biofilm in the body.  That's where germs mulitply.  It is found in a nasal spray called xlear (pronounced "clear") and in chewing gum called spry.  Pleasant tasting too!  Please ask doc about this and follow his/her advice.

can i take flonase nasal spray while on my truvada (prep) medication?

Flonase: If you take a nasal spray once a day you should be OK! You might be able to get a Flonase spray at the Pharmacy and not need a prescription.

would a simple virus cause my chest pain to worsen. i am taking augmenting allergy medication and nasal spray can i take mucinex for chest congestion?

A viral infection: could impact breathing, chest congestion &amp; chest tightness/ pain.

whats the difference between azelastine and fluticasone nasal spray? does both medication increase chances of cataracts in the eyes? is one safer than the other?

Accepted Answer

: Azelastine is an antihistamine and fluticasone is a steroid. Fluticasone has a potential to induce cataract when used for a prolonged period.  However, such risk potential for fluticasone spray is still very low.

i've used eye drops, nasal spray for dry nose, and a good allergy medication. can you recommend anything else for me?

Symptoms?: What are your symptoms?  Sounds like you are trying to treat allergies. Some of what you are doing may be exacerbating your symptoms if they are dry burning irritated eyes.

dear dr. i have a painful ear infection for 2 weeks now. i visited 2 chemists. 1st was given aurone and sinus medication including nasal spray . 2nd gave cortisone tablets for fluid in ear, and sinus meds. ear still not cleared up.

Ear Infection: If you truly have an ear infection you most probably need an antibiotic. Please see a physician rather than chemists for a proper diagnosis and correct medication.

fluticasone nasal spray has mentioned dosage of 2 puffs in each nostril. some of the liquid always goes in my throat or drips and falls out of the nose . is it safe if i do 3-4 sprays per nostril to compensate for this loss of medication?

: This is normal. Probably no "loss" is occurring and the standard dose probably will still be effective, i.e. plenty of the product remains where it needs to be and additional sprays probably would be an overdose. If uncertain, and especially if you're treating yourself, make an appointment with an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist) for personalized evaluation and advice. Good luck.

i've been prescribed dymista, an expensive brand name allergy nasal spray drug. is there a cheaper, generic alternative that does the same thing?

Individual drugs: It's fluticasone propionate and azelastine combo. First is OTC now, second needs Rx, but cheap; call doc for a script. I know other docs have their patients mix them (or other steroid nose sprays) together in same bottle, but that's totally off label - and I have no idea if they are compatible, so I personally do not recommend it. Just use one, then use the other.

what's the difference between a saline nasal spray & a nasal rinse (neti pot)?  i was told the spray will keep my nostrils moist. how? it's not a lube

Nasal saline: spray or rinse are the same almost, different technique of introducing the saline into the nasal cavity. As for keeping it moist, yes the saline dissolves the thick mucus and secretions , thus helping the natural moisturizing mechanisms of the nasal cavity lining to function properly, hope this helps, good luck
