Site/susceptibility: In any infection, seriousness depends not only on bug but the host.  Bug factor: site infection (blood vs skin colonizer ; all in between), virulence of organism, resistance to antibiotics.  Host factors: concomitant illnesses, nutritional status, immune function, functional capacity.  We see more ; more resistant organisms so this is a discussion you need to have w/your doc and ? An infection md.

No: A number of different bacterial can cause UTI. E coli is the commonest, The others being proteus, pseudomonas, klebsiella, Group B Streptococcus (GBS) Aerococcus and staphylococcus.

had uti caused by enterobacter. wasn't in hospital and am healthy/ never get infections.  uti resolved by cipro quickly. how did i get enterobacter? is this one of the uti bacterias?

Common UTI cause: This is not unusual. Enterobacter is a normal intestinal bacteria, carried by almost all people, and one of many intestinal bacteria that cause the large majority of UTIs. Not as common as a cause of UTI than other bacteria, such as E. coli, but not at all rare. If your symptoms cleared up and have not returned, no worries.

Serious enough: to require antibiotic therapy. This is generally a gastrointestinal bacteria and can be transmitted by any  contact with GI or rectal bacteria; however, often affects, skin, soft tissue and urinary  tract.Careful hand washing is mandatory.

Enterobacter: This germ is somewhat related to "E. coli" which you might have heard about. It is found in the GI tract -bowels mostly. When it gets 'out' of the area it's supposed to be in, it can cause disease. I think of urinary tract infections, intraabdominal abscesses and sometimes blood stream infections caused from this germ. It is somewhat tough so you might need an ID doc if it gets complicated.

Yes: Enterobacter aerogenes is a bacteria that can cause a variety of infections such as urinary tract infections, sepsis, pneumonia, skin/wound infections.  It typically does not occur in people who are otherwise healthy.  It can be picked up by patients who are hospitalized, particularly in an intensive care unit.  It can be picked up from contaminated surfaces. Antibiotic resistance can be a problem.

: If the 50,000 CFU/ml was in urine, you may have urinary infection and that can cause stomach pain. Talk to the doctor who ordered this test as she/he knows more about your health. Drink enough water daily so that your urine is mostly colorless.

Post op infection: Had surgery complicated by bacterial  wound infection treated by having surgery to reopen surgical siite to clean out the infection &  to identify the organism & then to be on usually 6 weeks of IV antibiotics to cure infection.  This is a surgical risk increased in: smokers, diabetics, people with poor nutrition  or certain rheumatologic/renal diseases or on chronic steroids or imunocompromised.

i'm a 29 year old male, i have an enlarged prostate and i've had a uti for almost 2 months. urine culture said: [greater than]100,000 cfu per ml of enterobacter aerogenes is this bad ?

: Clearly you have a UTI caused by E. aerogenes, and perhaps bacterial prostatitis as well. If you're not in the care of a urologist, you should see one now. If you are, follow his or her advice. E. aerogenes is no more serious or dangerous than many other bacteria, but you definitely need antibiotic treatment, perhaps for as long as 6 weeks or more. Good luck.

UTI, pyelonephritis?: You have a urinary tract infection due to Enterobacter. The abdominal or flank pain likely indicates your right kidney is involved (pyelonephritis) which is a potentially serious complication. You may need IV antibiotics, especially if you have fever. See a doctor ASAP, even if it means an after-hour visit to an urgent care clinic or emergency department. Good luck!
