i have narcolepsy due to a tbi and am having an egd.  are there any sedation concerns?  and should i take my stimulants the day of?

Narcolepsy: A significant concern with anesthesia is the interaction of commonly used narcolepsy medications (many are metabolized by the liver) and the drugs used to induce anesthesia.  During a pre-op the anesthesiologist will review your medications and see which ones are appropriate to take on the day of surgery.

Risks: All procedures have risks.  Risk of perforation is present, but small and risk of reaction to anesthesia, bleeding (especially is a biopsy needs to be taken), but it is a good test and overall safe with a good doctor.

Barrett's????: Barrett's esophagitis is a condition where chronic acid reflux from the stomach has irritated the esophagus to the point where there is an increased risk of cancer forming at the site of irritation. People with barrett's require regular (yearly or more frequent) monitoring with an egd (esophogastroduodenoscopy) by a gastroenterologist.

Tylenold and EGD: Normally patient going for egd, have nothing to eat or npo night before in the hospital setting but for the stand point of if the tylenol (acetaminophen) is going to interfere with the result if you take it the nigh before , the answer is not. The medication is full . In fact, all medications should be taken the night before as per recommendation of your doctor and no meds the day of the procedure.

Quite routine: Lot of time when an egd is done, there is high index of suspicion so there are more often stomach, esophageal, duodenal bx to confirn our suspicion.

It could: Mean gastroparesis or you ate something before the EGD

would it be okay to start my movi prep for my egd/colonoscopy tuesday if today is sun?

Accepted Answer

Not: A good idea. Best if done within 12 hours of the procedure but you can go on a clear liquid diet today and monday and drink the MoviPrep on monday as instructed.

Fair: It is often confined to the small intestine.

all i see are horror stories for egd. can i be fully sedated instead of consciously? will it be frightening? will i be in pain/anxious at home?

Yes,: Normally you receive conscious or moderate sedation, but yesterday the gastroenterologist asked me to help him with a particularly anxious patient on benzodiazepines, the versed had little effect but Propofol worked well. The patient was very pleased, didn't even know we did anything and did not require an artificial airwar.
