So sometimes wax may look one way then be a different color the next time, it is picking up the dirt and debris in the ear.  However if you're having pain with the discharge it could be an infection.  Best way to tell is have an ENT check it out.

Discharge = general: Discharge is a general term that simply means any type of substance leaking out from somewhere, such as pus, clear fluid, mucus, etc.  As such, bleeding can be a type of discharge. Bloody discharge from the ear is known as bloody otorrhea.

Maybe,maybe not: A kid with a painful buildup of pressure during a middle ear infection can experience quick relief if  a hole  develops.This is seen as the debris drains into the canal, lessening the pressure stretching the ear drum.Years ago docs cut a hole to allow such drainage if the pain was bad enough. Drainage could also mean a canal infection with to benefit.

i have eczema in my ears. they itch daily, then i scratch & then they will drain clear fluid -at night mostly. is this normal- it's a daily cycle!

Wax: Most likely wax. Water may be accumulating behind and around the wax after a shower and drains later at night. Nevertheless, you need to make sure that there no rupture of the TM causing an otitis media with drainage.
