Hard to predict: This can occur after rupture of an eardrum during an infection.It might self heal over weeks or months or drain indefinately until treated. It could be the result of a foreign material in the canal or outer canal infection &amp; either could self heal or become chronic. Either way, a visit to the doc could at least decide where the problem is &amp; allow treatment.

"best" is variable: Some may same...Best is to allow your body to clear the infection without intervention by medicines....Most will resolve on their own just as quickly without any antibiotics...Some will persist or develop complications so best to me would be treat if not resolved in a couple of days..Best is also not the most broad spectrum antibiotic...Best is amox at about 90mg/kg/day given twice a day.

Yes: See your pediatrician immediately.  Heavy drainage suggests a ruptured ear drum.  He needs antibiotic treatment and evaluation by an expert.

Yes and NO: Generally means your ear drum has ruptured.  Usually means that infection will resolve, but also means you have damaged your ear drum.  Good news is that the ruptured ear drum usually heals on its own.

Not necessarily: 2 conditions can result in "fluid" draining from a baby's ear(s): the first is an infection in the ear canal ("otitis externa"); the second is an infection behind the ear drum ("otitis media") that has come through the ear drum and is draining. Some baby's simply accumulate some small amount of bath water in ear canal. If the fluid is not clear, or if the fluid smells bad, get to your doctor.

: Ear infection is too broad.  External ear canal, distal to ear drum or on the cartilaginous part of your ear? Need more info.

if i have an ear infection and i use a steam inhaler is it possible that the fluid in the middle ear will dry out get crusted and become stuck in the middle ear and unable to drain or will it be more likely to drain? concerned about stuck fluid?

: I would not concern yourself with the steam inhalers effect on your middle ear. It would have no direct access to these structures. To the extent the moisture derived thins your mucus secretions better drainage may be possible. However, in practice I doubt it would have any effect pro or con.

Middle ear effusion : If you have fluid in the middle ear, we call that an effusion. This will cause congestion, pressure, and trouble hearing. You can take decongestants, mucolytics(thin mucus), and nasal steroids like Flonase, Nasacort, or Rhinocort OTC to help drain the fluid. If it persists, then see otolaryngologist for help.

i have a reoccurring ear infection that drains, foul smelling and has tested positive for mrsa. what causing it? what steps to take to get rid of it?

Staph: Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that's become resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections.  You need antibiotics that are effective against your specific bacteria.  Cannot tell you which antibiotics without culture and sensitivity testing.

if a young child is put on medication for an ear infection, is it normal for the ear to drain mucus?

Accepted Answer

Possibly: If the ear drum has ruptured from the ear infection - which is not uncommon.. Then yes you would see drainage from the ear. If there is a rupture (typically very small - pinpoint), it will heal within a week. The medication (i presume an antibiotic) did not cause the drainage.
