White bread n&#x27; sugar: White bread and sugar are quickly digested by the body.  Both can cause spikes in blood glucose and a resulting insulin surge, leading to fat deposition, weight gain, increased lipid levels, oxidative stress and the so-called &quot;metabolic syndrome&quot;.  Such foods should form only a small part of one&#x27;s daily caloric intake, if even any part at all.

Whole Grain: Compared to white flour, whole grains take longer for the stomach & intestines to break down into sugar, and so the sugar is absorbed more gradually into the blood stream and is less likely to cause a spike.  A 15 gram whole grain slice will put just as much sugar into the blood as a 15 gm slice of white bread, but spread out over a longer period of time, and so requires lower Insulin levels.

It varies: Calorie for calorie, soda with high fructose corn syrup will increase your sugar and insulin levels more than pasta. However, eating 500 calories of pasta could spike your glucose and insulin levels more than 50 calories of soda. So lots of pasta can have more effect than a little soda. It is related to the glycemic index of the food and the calories consumed. www.glycemicindex.com has numbers.

Bread: Is unhealthy on many levels.  High fructose corn syrup is, obviously, not great but the grains used to make bread cause a variety of other issues. Bread made from wheat has been shown to raise blood sugar and to cause inflammation.  Wheat gets broken down into sugar (even if there is no sugar added). Wheat also contains gluten, which is addictive and inflammatory.

Diet: Your diet may be lacking in protein and certain vitamins.  Do consider adding additional protein sources such as tofu, lentils and beans along with a B vitamin supplement, specifically one with B-12.
