really dry nose and throat. i have also been diagnosed and being treated for periodontal disease. some mornings when i wake up while brushing teeth and tongue i spit and gag blood. is this from deep pockets as i dont see active bleeding sometimes?

Dentist/Periodontist: Your periodontist or family dentist can do the dna testing and identify those. The best preventive measure for periodontitis (gum disease) is removing the bacteria colonies from your teeth and gums especially in between teeth. Use soft tooth brush and floss twice a day. Concentrate on one tooth at a time, take your time. At first you will have some bleeding & soreness due to the infection.

Dental check up: At a dental checkup they take x-rays to determine if you have decay or periodontal problems. Ask the dentist if you have perio disease at that time. It is a very easy question to answer for a dentist when seeing the patient, Med and Dent Hx, and current x-rays.

See Periodontist: A periodontist can help you control the aggressive forms of perio disease. Oral dna testing can tell you what specific pathogens are present and what antibiotics can help. Non-surgical (scaling & root planing) and surgical therapies (osseous surgery) may be suggested. Continual follow up with the hygienist or periodontist and maintaining prescribed home care & hygiene visits are paramount.

Yes: Periodontal disease is not age specific.  Improper oral hygiene can lead to periodontal problems as well as decay in the young patient. Crowed teeth can also contribute to periodontal problems in the young patient.  Juvenile periodontitis is a more severe and aggressive form of periodontal disease if left undiagnosed and untreated that can lead to premature loss of teeth.

Periodontal disease: The best and earliest symptom of periodontal disease is one you can see for yourself in a mirror. Look at the little pink triangles of gum tissue that fill the spaces between the teeth. They should be pink, long, narrow and completely fill the space. In early gum disease they start to recede and become shorter and fatter and may disappear completely. Another symptom may be gum bleeding.
